Krystal is the South's answer to White Castle — a 1932 Chattanooga-born chain serving square mini-burgers ("Krystals," not "sliders") since three years before White Castle opened its first Southern location. The fries are unremarkable by design: standard-cut frozen potatoes fried in refined soybean oil, salted after frying. On Krystal vs. White Castle Krystal (1932, Chattanooga) and White Castle (1921, Wichita) are America's two oldest mini-burger chains. Krystal remained a Southeastern concern while White Castle expanded across the Midwest and Northeast. The two chains have technically never competed in the same markets — White Castle stayed north of the Mason-Dixon line through most of its history, Krystal stayed south. Their fry programs differ: Krystal uses standard frozen-supply fries; White Castle offers Crinkle Cut Fries, Sliderz Fries (seasoned waffle cuts), and has more variety on their menu.
